To make a long story short, I am going to part out the 51, not the 48.

The 51 had a Sherman back hoe attached to it for most of its life and the damage to the trumpets is obvious as well as to the top link
area. There is no evidence that a front end loader was ever attached
and the steering sector seems mint as well as having a seemingly
Tight tranny. It would appear that the backhoe was run off of a front mounted pump the front pulley has a adapter that looks like a 1" 6
spline PTO female receptacle. The dash is damaged so I will need a new late model one with a proof meter hole to accomodate the late model steering sector.

The plan at this point is to split the 51 and pull the tranny with the steering sector attached and go though it prior to the transplant
into the 48. I will then use the 8N model air cleaner to replace the 2N
that my 48 currently has on it.

Ironically the 51 is painted blue too and the hyd pump was replaced with a 48 vintage pump.

I have a few questions:

1. I am missing the bolt that connects the Sherman High/Low shift lever to the unit. I have been told it is an alan head bolt and the length
is critical. does anyone know the specs on this bolt before I do the
emprical thing?

2. I need a grommet for the shift lever hole as well, Suggestions?

3. The Sherman has its own oil reservoir, I was thinking that I would like to use Amsoil synthetic gear oil in it. Is there any reason that I should not?

4. While I am going though the Sherman as well as 51 tranny are there any specific things to check for unique to the 8n tranny (I have
rebuilt several manual trannys so you can dispense with the obvious
items IE. worn gears, bad bearings, seals, ect.)

FWIW, the older dash can be modified slightly to accept the later steering box. Just cut a small part away from where the steering box would make contact. ray

I think you will find that the bearing between the two transmissions has no seal, allowing the tranny fluid to run freely between the two. the only time you fill the tranny is on installation. after that, it just comes over from the regular tranny. So amsol, while a great product, in a shor time will be diluted.

Can't help on the other stuff.

Take Care
Steve
