I fought the tree, and the tree won.

Well, I had had a pretty good day considering the heat and had gotten a good bit of bush-hoggin done before the accident happened. I had Ole Sarge (41 9N) in second gear with 3/4 throttle and a big 5' bush hog on the back when I found myself needing to turn right to avoid an oak tree. I cut the wheels hard right, and when the tractor kept going forward, I stood with both feet on the right brake pedal to swing the tractor - but it was too late.....

I rammed my left front wheel into that tree and snapped my left radius arm in half like a dry twig. It was an original I-beam that had been welded together once before.

My delima: Of course I need to repair or replace the radius arm, but how can I assess the damage, if any, to the fron axle. It looks OK, but how do I know for sure. Thanks for your help.

One way to check to see if the axle is bent is to measure from a "fixed" point on the axle (ie. spindle center) to a "fixed" point somwhere on the opposite side rear axle. Do this on both sides to see if is "square". Both measurements should be the same.

To determine damage to the axle, check to see how much it is shaped like the oak tree you hit. If it still looks more like an axle than a tree, and it doesn't stick going over uneven ground (after you fix the radius arm), count your lucky stars!

Now tell us the truth, did you really think you could whack that oak with a 5' brush hog?

Glad you (and your N) lived to tell about it, thanks for reminding everyone to BE CAREFUL!

Sorry to hear about your accident, but glad you walked away from it.

I have only a year of 2N ownership under my belt, but here are my observations of your situation and some reminders for those reading this message.

Since the radius arm was broken, I would think some damage would have been done to the King Pin. What happened to the other radius arm? It is possibl that the shock loosened up one of the adjustable portions of the front axle.

Taking off the hood to at least have a look at it would be a good idea. Remember, a bent radius arm or loose king pin can cause damage to the distributor cap so while it si visible, see if the clearances are okay.

Also, ZANE has warned us about how many times in his professional career he had to replace a second gear damaged by bush hogging. Since the rotary mowers are not belt driven, they put greater stress on the Transmission. Next time do it in first.

Since the tractor didn't turn, I would assume that the differential locked up. I am not sure if this is the case, or not, but I believe this will always happen when the PTO is driving the transmission and not the engine. Jack up the rear of the tractor and see if you can get the rear wheels to spin in different directions by hand at the same time.

stay safe!

Ed, I thought the same thought when he mentioned hoggin in 2nd gear. Then I remembered that Zane's warning applies to 2nd gear in the 8N 4 speed tranny. I'm not sure the warning applies to the 9N/2N 3 speed trans.

How 'bout it Zane?

that is a good point but I recall ZANE saying they were the same gear - I might be wrong.

An ORC only benefits if the clutch is disengaged or if the transmission is shifted into neutral. Since both feet were on the right brake, I don't think there was any clutch disengaging going on.

I would think twice before mowing "sidesaddle".

I was trying to make my portrayal of an act of desperation sound more interesting. In the process I just made myself sound dumber than I actually am (if that's possible).

Left foot on the clutch. Right foot on the right brake. Two hands on the wheel hangin' on for dear life.

Hey Old Ag!
I've done a few of those "death grip" stops myself. Chances are you bent the steering wheel worse than the axle! LOL
