I am looking into purchasing a Ford 8N which does not have live PTO. Is it possible to modify the 8N to get the live PTO (and hydraulics) capability? The person who is selling it stated you may be able to buy a "slip clutch" that would allow the PTO to free spin when the PTO is disengaged. Is this true and has anyone done it?

No, there is no way to make the PTO live, that is to say the PTO shaft gets its power from the transmission therefore when the clutch is engaged, the PTO looses its power. Since the hyd. pump is driven from the PTO, this causes loss of hydraulics as well. Several people have posted procedures for using an auxiliary hydraulic pump run from the front of the engine to keep the hydraulics live. Also, the "slip clutch" mentioned sounds like an ORC (over running coupler) which prevents the transmission from being driven by the implement when the clutch is engaged. The best example of this is using a rotary brush mower, which has a large flywheel. When the clutch is engaged, the flywheel keeps turning, thereby turning the transmission and keeping the tractor moving eventhough the cluth is engaged. This is a bad situation if the tractor is pointed at a car, building, etc. The ORC will allow the PTO to spin faster that the transmssion, allowing the tractor to stop eventhough the implement is spinning down.

You definately want to invest in an ORC - it slips over the existing PTO - but if you want live hydraulics, look at an NAA instead of an 8N.

Ed there is a way to get live power and hyd on a 8N. It was built by sherman mfg for the 8N and it was very similiar to the unit on the NAA. The only real differance is the unit in the 8N is manually applied. We have a restored 8N with the unit in the tractor. They are pretty rare but there is a handfull of these units out there. Rod, How does the unit work? What is it driven off of? I have seen some old truck PTOs driven off the ring gear. Driveing a PTO off of a small dry ring gear doesn't sound good to me. I have a couple of truck PTOs that bolt to the transmission side case and are driven by gears inside the trany. Dave <*)))><

And if you really want live hydraulics and live pto, look a little further ahead and find you a nice 660 or 860.
