I HAVE TROUBLE INGAGING THE PTO. SOMETIMES IT LOCKS UP AND YOU CAN NOT EVEN MOVE THE PTO ENGAGEMENT LEVER. IF YOU PECK IT WITH A HAMMER IT WILL INGAUGE. SOMETIMES IT JUST GRINDS LIKE CRAZY AND DOESN'T WANT TO STAY ENGAUGED. HAS ANYONE ELESE HAD THIS PROBLEM? IF SO HOW DO YOU FIX IT? DO YOU HAVE TO SPLIT THE TRACTOR APART? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

A common malady, usually caused by constantly engaging and disengaging the PTO with the main drive clutch engaged. The PTO shifter system is absolutely not designed to shift under power.

Most likely, the splines on the PTO shaft or on the PTO shifter collar or on the PTO drive hub have been buggered up by this sort of treatment. It may be that you are lucky and the shifter mechanism is gummed up, but not likely - the whole thing runs submerged in oil.

Hopwever, whatver it is, you don't need to split the tractor to fix it. The shifter mechanism, the sliding shift collar and the drive hub (which is attached to the rear end of the trasnmission layshaft) can all be accessed by removing the PTO shaft and then dropping the hydraulic pump.

I would start by removing the side cover with the lever on it. Look at the little cast arm to see
if it is bent or damaged, and see if the if it moves freely, chek to see if the pin holding the lever on the shaft is not bent or sheared.
this is the cheep easy part. If all is OK,
then I would think about draining the oil.
careful here you have 5 gallons coming out. make sure you have a CLEAN pan and bucket
so you can pour it back in.
you are looking for water. When I drained my 51 i just got,it had better than a gallon of water and it had rusted the PTO engagement collar which just so happens to be at a very low point in the sump. you can reach in under the shaft and there is a 1/2" dia rod/shaft with the equivilent of two thick washers about 5/8" apart that the arm of the engagement lever fits between to pull it back and forth on the pto shaft can you move it?

If not your going to pull the PTO shaft by removing the 4 bolts at the rear end.

Look at the shaft to see if A the splines are messed up or B if yoy had water in there is it rusty? or is the shaft bent? hows the bearing?

with the PTO shaft out now can you move the little engagement shaft try puting the cover on with a couple of bolts and see if it moves.
you should feel a sharp positive movement if not. Your going to be splitting the tractor.
