Idle Question Missing pins

Hiya,

Well after my discovery of the problems with my ole 8N - I rectified all of them but still have some concerns! I replaced the plugs with 437s and tightened to recommended torque, I replaced the plug wires with copper core and soldered each connection, I replaced the muffler clamps with a new set and even replaced the sediment bowl filter and gasket! I removed the existing fuel lines and cleaned them all completely.

I seem to still have somewhat of a governor or idling problem. My throttle does not respond to any movement until I am about 1/2+ up the throttle plate. According to the proofmeter it is running at 1900RPM min at all times when I start her up and I cannot seem to bring her down. (throttle does not seem to function at all until I reach 1/2+ on plate - no low idle) Then at max my RPMs are off of the guage (normal?) they hover around 2500+RPMs?

The engine never tries to stall but it doesn't seem to be "responding" properly. Any insight on this? Should I pop open the govenor since it seems also that I am having an issue with the tractor/hog coming up to speed as easily as it once did? Let me know what to look for! Thanks

Question 2:

While replacing some components I noticed that my oval tube radius rod on the carb/gov/exhaust side was slightly loose. It is not horribly loose but it does move. I chcked the other side and it is solid and has some type of cotter pin or something holding it in place. Any hitns on this?
It appears that there is a hole in the bottom (where pin should be) and I can stick my finger up the bolt area about 1" - Did something break off and/or what should be in there? Any insight on checking or repairing this?

Ok, thanks in advance for any support.

Andy

Andy, you need to look at the throttle operation to troubleshoot your problem. Stand on the right side of the tractor and watch the linkage. When you move the throttle lever forward, you should see movement of the throttle plate on the carb. The whole process is a mechanical linkage from the throttle lever to one of the arms on the governor. Then movement is transferred from one arm to the other via a spring. This spring should have no slop in it and no preload. This means that as one arm moves so should the other. The other arm then is connected via a shorter rod to the throttle plate. Another area of concern is the ball socket ends on the rods, they should fit tight on the sockets. If not, replace them. The rods and sockets are available from Just-8Ns. While you are there, order a new radious rod bolt. Yes the old style have a hole in the bottom for a cotter key. some newer styles may have a nut...
Here is hoping you keep your bandwith up...
Happy Motoring

The linkages do not move in sequence with one another --- There seems to be a delay for the carb linkage - plus the arms at the gov post are loose with lateral movement possible. Should the linkages move at the gov move simultaneously? There looks like some "play" in the works. Spring looks ok - but the links seem to have side play. Anyway to eliminate this?

Thx
Andy

I used an old feeler gauge to bush my governor. Found one of the right thickness, cut it and wrapped it around the arm. It took that lateral slop out of it.
