I am NOT a tractor mechanic by any means. A friend of mine let his 8N sit to long in the open and #4 had its rings freeze. We R2'd the rings in all four cyl. and while it was easy to get to replaced the points. (front Dis. early 8N) We put it all back together but it trys to start but just won't quite kick off. It sound like it is out of time but the dis. was not pulled and I was under the impression it is almost impossible to get one of these out of time. Did I mess up when getting the points in? I have .015 on hign lobe. Any help would be most helpful. Please e-mail at my address. Thanks ahead of time.

Pat.

Got it running. I used the advice of all concerned plus my neighbor who is a big rig mech. by trade. Thanks to all.

Take out the spark plugs and put in about a big table spoon of oil in each cylinder. This will boost the compression on an engine that has been idle for a long time or one that has recently been into. I do it every time I fix an engine. Don't add more than one table spoon or you could cause a liquid lock and bend a rod or break a piston.

The timing can be made to fire earlier on the compression stroke by loosening the screw on the left side of the distributor and pushing up on the screw and then retighten it. The screw is what holds the distributor plate and when you move it you move the plate.

1. Do you have spark at the points?
2. Do you have spark at the plugs?
3. Have you checked compression? Are the valves opening and closing?
4. Did you do anything to the cam or crankshaft when you worked on the pistons?
5. what exactly did you do to the pistons and rings?
6. Do you have fuel in the carb?

On the front mount, there is only one way to mount the distributor back without forcing it. These things will generally start and run without being timed 100% right.
