I have the lift cover off a 8n and the long arm that goes from the lift cover to the control valve on the pump has a slight bend in it a photo of it in the service manual makes it look to be straight. The lift has poor height control it will go down to far when you move the hand lever just a little.

Philip, As you have already heard, the arm should be straight. Mine was bent too. In fact I had a hard time believing it wasn't that way from the factory. I straightened it on an anvil with a hammer.(be careful) The best suggestion I can offer you is to buy Zanes booklet and jig. I wouldnt be without mine.

Thanks for all the replies,I am going to get the book and jig as I have two 8ns that have the rod bent and the lift on neither works just as it should.

The control rod should be perfectly straight.

When a bent one is encountered it is usually from someone doing a short cut fix of the lift. This can be done to temporarily make the lift raise when it has worn the internal parts so much that it stops lifting.

There is a right way to fix the N lift and a wrong way. This is the wrong way. It just makes bad matters worse and is the child of ignorance. I admit I have done it myself before I learned it was better to go on and fix the lift like it is supposed to be.

I have compiled a booklet and make a jig that you can use to properly adjust the lift on the 8N tractor. See the link below to learn more about it.

The control arm should be straight. It can be carefully straightened. I don't know if that is causing your problem though. How about the cam follower pin? Is it worn? HTH Steve 8N 169302
