8N Overheating

Used my father's 8N yesterday to pull some logs about a 1/4 mile. On the third set of logs, not that heavy, the radiator fluid came out pretty heavy.

The radiator was not overfilled, and it was tested not too long ago as being good for -40.

We use this N to pull a set of gang mowers for 2 hours or more at a time and it does not overheat.

Is there a simple way to deterine if this is a bad thermostat or water pump...I prefer it to be the thermostat.

I have 'heard' some folks just remove the thermostat...but that doesn't seem to safe to me.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Sal

When the engine is cold and running, look in the radiator - if fluid is swirling then pump is working. Take off upper radiator hose and remove thermostat - it should slip out. Put it in a pot of boiling water in the itchen and see what happens. If it opens, then it is working.

I had a rough lesson last winter. I thought I was doing the right thing by filling my radiator up to the top. My 2N lt me know it was not the right thing. This started a siphon using the overflow tube that did not stop until it looked like about a gallon of coolant on the Garage floor. The fluid should just cover the core or its going to drain.

My radiator has never overheated, it just pees a little now and then.

I would definitely remove the thermostat first and see what happens then. I have run my 8N without a thermostat for over a year without any problems. If it still overheats then - you probably have a water pump issue.

The only water pump problems could be broken impellers, (a chance in 1000), or a clogged water pump or water pump intake, (another chance in 1000). Radiator being clogged or bad thermostat are more likely. Do not run without a thermostat. Make sure the thermostat is pointed in the right direction, that is spring side toward the engine. Also, make sure you have molded top and bottom hoses. Aftermarket non-molded hoses may sometimes collapse while you are running, and you don't even know it. Don't know if you have a pusher or puller fan, but I always maintain that a pusher fan pushing all that hot engine air thru the radiator never made much sense to me, unless you are in a winter operation mode. The N if in good shape has lots of cooling capacity to handle the roughest jobs on the hottest days. And so should yours. My $.02
