Figured you guys could help me on this one.
I have a 66 gmc 3/4 ton that I just had
inspected. The inspector said that I needed a new lower ball joint, only one
one side. My question, there are two ball joints per tire (upper and lower)
and I was wondering if I should just replace the two lower ones, or do I need
to have all four replaced. To replace the two lower ones was $250.00. Thanks
for any advice in advance.

I have been a mechanic for over 30 years and seen ball joints (upper and lower) last over 300,000 miles (meticulously maintained) or barely last the warranty period (more my luck). Take heed to all the good advice posted here, second opinions etc. Money is hard enough to come by without throwing it away. Always good advice is 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'

The '66 was a tough truck, I am sure you will be able to get plenty of more miles out of her!

Having replaced a lot of ball joints, I have never ran into bad uppers on GM. (Although, it does happen)
Happy Motoring

Thanks for your responses. Claus, that is just the kind of previous experience that I was looking for. I will replace both of the lower ball joints and have it realigned.

-To replace the two lower ones was $250.00.-

I assume by that sentence the work has already been completed. If so: 1. The person doing the work should have pointed out any problem with the upper joints. Not doing so would result in a "comeback complaint" should you experience a front end shimmy or noise.

2. If the work has already been done, it would mean taking everything back apart that was just taken apart thus costing double!

If the work has not been done yet, make sure it's checked out completely, if you're going to take it apart, you might as well fix whatever needs to now. If you're checking it yourself: Jack the front end up so the suspension hangs just off the ground (don't forget the jackstands) Slide a prybar under the front wheel, using upward force check for any vertical play. Grab the wheels at the 3 - 9 o'clock and then the 12 - 6 o'clock and check to see if any play is evident. Then check the components themselves, see if the rubber dust covers are torn, etc. If so, dirt and water will hasten failure. A lot of the older ball joints will have wear indicators on them at the grease fitting, as the joint wears out the fitting recedes into the joint.

How long are you going to keep it?
How does it drive now?
How do you use it?
How much are you going to use it? What is the condition of the rest of the truck?
How bad are the other components including the other ball joints? Find someone you can TRUST to evaluate the front end and give you a detailed list of the required components. Get a couple estimates that list what is needed and see if they are the same. You should have a front end alignment each time you replace one or more components.
Perhaps your friendly lubrication person failed to get grease into that one fitting and the rest of the front end may be in good shape. I have seen this exact scenario.
The answer would be based on these and possibly other questions.
We'll keep this BB legal and mention that Ns don't have suspension ball joints except at the ends of the radius rods. fwiw,
ray
