BUSHHOG Fluid Replacement?????

Was back in the saddle (thanks mostly to Dell and his stern advice - haha) - tractor ran beatifully and had plenty of power - did not stall once. (Thanks Dell) -- Back to my question...

I have a "highly modified offroad" 4runner and I know we drain and replace the differential fluids at set intervals. I looked over my HOWSE 5' HOG and it does have a drain plug and a fill hole just like any normal differential gear box assembly. My question is - does anyone drain, flush and replace the fluid in the gear box or is it considered "maintainance free" (grin)

Please advise. This unit is only about 2.5 months old and has about 20 hours on it total so this is more of a "down the line" question.

Regards
Andy

Andy, I was reading my book last night and it has a mtnc. schedule in it. I'll look tonight and send it to you.
I think I have your e-mail

Hey Andy, Another idea to consider, Zane has commented before about the lube situation on these little gearboxes. He is a proponent of filling them with gun grease. His reasoning is if you hit something like barbwire it will wrap around the output shaft and possibly tear the seal out. Being underneath the deck you might not notice until too late that you have lost your 90 weight. Gun grease however would tend to stay in there a little better. I drained mine this spring and switched to grease. Just another option to consider.

I was just wondering the same thing last weekend. Im using my Rhino SE-5 for the second season and was just scouring the owners manual trying to answer the same question. There is no mention at all about changing oil nor would I know what kind of oil to use. I understand that there are different levels of expertise on this board and I because of my inexperience found the question very timely. Sure I will check the oil, but it dosen't hurt to ask. Its better than calling some 800 number and pressing every number and option then walk away without an answer.

Andy, I agree with another poster about draining it after breakin and put in new fluid. Then change it once a year. Its hard to believe some people never change oils. They sure save a lot of money, huh.-----Michael

Andy, Allways check the fluid levil when you get it new. Someone on the production line may have forgot to install the lube. I then change it after the first season when it is still under warranty and check it for foriegn matter. You may find macheing chips etc. I strain it through cheese cloth. Then I seldom ever change it again. Check the level cold. You will usually spot any leaks at the input and output seals. Dave <*)))><

Not sure about the maintenance schedule there on yours.

I have a Bush Hog and the manual says to use a 90 wt. lube for the differential gearbox.

This is a SQ-60 model that I have.

Bush Hog used to have owner manuals that could be down-loaded from thier web-site...Maybe Howse has the same...just a thought...good luck.

Andy, Come on, just change it at the beginning of each season. Moniter oil level just like you do your tractor. Add as needed.

Damn, what the h*ll is your problem?

I have heard before with certain gear boxes that the factory considers them "sealed" and they routinely do not require a drain and flush. I was mearly asking a question --- I apologize if you you were so put off with the pure ignorance of my request. Perhaps we all don't know it all except for you, Jerry.

Dell, no I never got a manual with the unit - picked it up straight from the factory for a 35% discount.

Hey Jerry,
You wouldn't happen to live in a glass house would you?

Saved 35% direct from factory but didn't get a owners manual. So when you can not take care of it properly how much did you really save? Maybe this is one of those sell at a loss but make it up in volume deals. Go back and ask for the manual. If the factory can not supply you with one find a dealer or post the type of mower and maybe someone can copy it for you. Right copypight laws.

And as for you know it all comment, NO I don't know it all just a little more than you.

Andy..... ..glad to learn your tractors got its sparkies back. (grin)

I suspect that there are an awfull lot of brushogs that still have their original gearbox oil inna them.

I suspose if'n I was doing some under water 'hoggin, I might have some concern about water gettin in.

But since your brushog is only 2 mos old, implys you might have just bought it, didn't it come with somesort of owners handbook? What does it say? ..... .....Dell
