Does that mean the fuel mixture is too rich? and the plugs are showing some minor carbon build up too.

And, if I have it right, I adjust the idle screw and tighten it a bit? To reduce the fuel and provide a leaner mixture of less fuel?

Please correct me if I have got it wrong. Or, give me an "attaboy" if I'm on the right track. thanks.

In ignorance, 9N'er

Make sure your intake is clean, no mouse nests and that your choke is fully open. I dont think the idle mixture has that much effect. On old cars I usually adjusted that by ear to gain the most rpm then turned the idle back down to the proper rpm. I would more think hot enough spark or compression.

And yes, black smoke, black insulaters on the plugs means too rich. They should be a light tan.

9N'er,

If I read the manual right, the idle adjust screw meters the air admitted. By adjusting in, you reduce the air and thus richen the mixture. Opposite of what you want.

Now, if I hear Del and others correctly, to adjust the idle correctly you wait until warm and let it idle. Then you adjust it for max RPMs. If your plugs show dark after that adjust, I would lean out the main/power jet. (screw in)

I am in the middle of dialing mine in now too after a complete clean/rebuild.
