Always shut of the gas. However if you are real used to reaching in and turning it off on your 8N, then late one night you end up on your 871, don't just blindly reach in like it was your 8N. There's a muffler there.

I always wear leather gloves (well almost always) when I'm working, even though my buddy teases me about being a sissy. CANNOT tell you how many burns and cuts I have avoided by wearing them. Thay even mitigate getting smashed and pinched by things like hammers, etc.

I started years ago when I got my fingers smashed by the clutch pedal working on an old Plymouth station wagon. The pedal would stick half way out and I got my hand in between the stop and the pedal while under the car. I bumped something and the pedal popped the rest of the way out, OUCH!!!! Grease smashed into your skin is NOT fun and washing it out of the cut is LESS fun! I got so used to wearing them that I could/can pick up almost anything off a concrete floor, even flat washers.

Dell, I think you should add to your safety preaching wearing gloves when working on/around the tractor. :-)

You're right. I work in a chemical plant and injury statistics started a new rule that all mechanics and operators must wear gloves in the field.
