CARB FLOODING

Sometimes, the carb will be dripping in the morning or after our 8N has set for awhile and then is hard to start. Is this common? What is the cause?

When we rebuilt it, the carb did not have an idle jet. When we put an idle jet in, it doesn't seem that the adjustment needle makes any difference.

What type of hydraulic oil should we use?

Help please. Thanks.

Well, first things first - are you leaving your fuel flow on all of the time? Think it is getting past your float and up in the cylinders and then flooding your engine. Usually if the float is in good condition leaving the flow on is ok, but it sounds as though you are having problems. Difficult starting is most common if you leave the fuel flow on. I always turn mine off after I finish working the tractor.

Age old question. Straight SAE-80W90 Tractor Transmission/Hydraulic oil. (NOT THE SAME AS UNIVERSAL TRACTOR HYDRAULIC FLUID 10W-20) or the newer and Ford/NH recommended M2C134D (or 134-D) gear oil. Some say that if you have any weakness or problems with your hydraulics (have problems holding loads up for long times) then use the heavier 80W90. If you aren't having any problems, then go with the newer Ford 134-D. I had a slight lift holding problem and it was "partial solved" by the draining and changing to SAE80W90 oil.

llamas did a fabulous write-up on this. Check the archives for FULL STORY HYDRAULIC.

Good luck,
Andy

when I got my 2N I found that the previous owner had drilled a small hole in the bottom ofthe hose connecting the carb to the air cleaner tube - guess that was his flood protection device. Probably was also a good fire starting device!

Another example of Ethiopian Engineering. Some people forget that when the needle seat leaks, it also leaks when the tractor is running. If the leak is greater than the fuel demand, then fuel will get through the bowl vent and could make idle adjustment difficult.

""Sometimes, the carb will be dripping in the morning or after our 8N has set for awhile and then is hard to start. Is this common? What is the cause?""

float adjustment - note most agree that the fuel should be shut off when not in use - the fuel tank allowing for gravity flow and the carb being an updraft type can allow the cylenders and crankcase to fill with gas

""When we rebuilt it, the carb did not have an idle jet. When we put an idle jet in, it doesn't seem that the adjustment needle makes any difference.""

difference in the dripping?

""What type of hydraulic oil should we use?""

original spec sez 90 wt gear oil. I use harvest king transhydraulic meeting the ford/newholland M134 spec.
