Clutch Problem?

On my '51 8N it I have a problem shifting into gears after about 45 minutes or so. It's like I am not pressing the clutch in/down far enough, even though I press as far as I can.

This problem only occures after the 8N has been working, when it's first started gear shifting is fine.

I have no idea what this is. Something to do with the clutch heating up? Is there and adjustment I can do?

Thanks.

Sal

Try stepping on the clutch and waiting a few seconds or maybe even 10 seconds. If it does not grind when waiting there is no problem. It's lilke Ray said, the oil thins out when hot. It's easier for the trainy to spin and takes a while to slow down. You will notice it more also when the revs are up. When idling or running slow it will slow down faster. If waiting does not help then your clutch is dragging, adjustment may help.

That's a good point. I have notices it is tougher to shift when it's heated up and I am at higher RPMS...also noticed that waiting a bit on the clutch helps the problem.

THANKS A LOT!!!

Chances are your clutch has some junk on the surfaces. Might be getting a little stickier when hot. Also the tranny lubrication thins out when hot and the drag to the gears is less and they spin easier so it is easier to get a grinding action. Might be able to adjust the clutch and get out of it. Free play is supposed to be 3/4" on the 8N. Adjustment is made by the adjustment eye bolt on the left side of the clutch housing. Might search the archives, I think I remember Dr Zane saying something about putting talc down in the clutch to soak some up of the junk. Heck, I might have been dreaming that. fwiw, ray
