I just installed a Tisco 12 volt conversion stystem. I know there has been a lot of dialog relative to this subject but, I still seem to have some questions.
The 2N starts great, ammeter is not registering, RPM's are not what they were with 6 volts, and I don't know how to wire the lights. Other than that everthing is great, except the heat and humidity in Missouri.
I know about trading the 6 volts to 12 volt bulbs, but what is the wiring specifications? Do they stay the same? Do I really need to excite the alternator. I tried to follow the "directions" from Tasco and think it's wired correctly, BUT..... ...

Any help will be appriciated
Thanks

You might want to add the two additional wires (likely not included in your kit) that allow the alternator to charge at low RPMs without first reving up the motor. One goes from the small spade terminal #2 (on the outside at the rear of the alternator casing) to the output terminal on the back of the alternator. The other wire goes from the spade terminal #1 to a 12volt switched source and must include either a one way diode or an idiot light (such as low oil pressure light on most cars). Lacking the diode or idiot light will allow current to reverse and the tractor won't shut off with the key. I used a fifty amp diode but see the archives for more on the necessary specs for the diode.

Hope this helps.

Maybe tisco took in account low rpm charging and put on a smaller pulley. My alt is an off the shelf for X model Gm vehicle wired like you discribe and you have to get it above an idle to start it charging, but once it does you can go back down to a slow idle and it still charges.

Yes, you do have to raise the RPM's a little above idle to start charging; but without the two wires I described above, I had to rev the motor well beyond 2000 RPM to start charging and that to me was unacceptable. I found out about the two wires from a local generator/alternator shop owner (who has an Oliver in his front yard in the city) before I found this board. Most of the kits (from what I've read) do not include these wires nor any mention of them. As for the pulley, I'd bet there is only one size available for the wide belt on the alternator as a smaller pulley would stress the belt too much. It's a pretty small pulley as it is.
If I were to change another N to 12 volts, I would make my own brackets and find the small parts locally. An alternator is cheep at local wrecking yards and by piecing it together one could do the job for less than half what the kits cost, and they require shipping on top of that. The pulley is available at Steven's for about $30 and except for the battery would be the most expensive part of the swap.

N — joy.

Maybe you just need a little more rpm to get the alt charging. Run it up to half trottle once. What do mean not enough rpms?

Russ, Can you scan and post the instructions? If not maybe some one else that has done the Tisco conversion will speak up.

Russ..... ....on any 12 volt conversion, all you gotta due is change the lightbulbs to 12 volts. Donna hafta do ennything to the wires themselves.

If'n ampmeter was working on yer 6 volt system then it oughtta work in yer 12 volt conversion. Ampmeters donna care what the volts are, they juss care which direction the current is flowing. And by convention, Positive (+) means current is flowing INTO the battery, thus charging it.

If'n all ya gotts is a zero reading on yer amp meter, then eather 1) miss-wired or 2) alternator is not charging.

If'n TASCO sez: ya gotta excite yer alternator, then I 'spect ya better foller their instructions. I have never read the TASCO instuction sheet, so I haven't got a clue..... .Dell
