12 volt conversion

Well I got it excited. It took several tries. Well what can I say.... The meter will activate at full throttle and indicate full charge for a couple of seconds and then drop off to two amps. Is this normal?
The RPMs don't seem as high at full throttle as it did with the 6 volt system. Maybe during installation I moved adjustments on the governor or maybe its just running so smooth and quite with the new 12 volt system it just seems to be lower I would like to check the RPMs at full throttle. I have an old Sears RPM/Dwell meter that hasn't been used since I worked on my new "56 Ford Crown Vic. Will it work on the 2N and where do you connect the two cables?

Russ..... ..to use the ol' dwell/tach, ya gotta have meter leads across the coil primary. Since the frontmount only has 1 eazy to get terminal, ya really gotta be desperate to figger out how to get the other lead in throught the distributor/coil mounting interface.

Me, If'n I just had to know what the engine RPMs were, I'd check out JC Whitney's stick-on tach and hr meter. Looks kinda like a plastic pocketwatch. Adjustable for any number of cylinders. About $20 or so. It is battery operated and senses vibration and determines RPMs thata ways..... .Dell

You would have to bring a wire out from the bottom of the coil to attach to. Use the terminal that goes to the points, not the one to the cap.
It sounds like you are getting a normal amount of charge considering it is likely a new and/or freshly charged battery.
See my responses to your earlier posts on how to eliminate having to rev it up so much to excite the alternator.

This is normal for a 1-wire alternator. Tractors don't generally turn the alternator fast enough for a 1-wire to startup at idle.

If this is a standard 3-wire alternator, what kind of current-limiting device is in the excitation circuit (the wire that goes to the ignition switch)?

If I recall correctly, an amp meter won't read a large ammount on a decently charged battery, 2 amps is actually kind of high if you think of it.

Now, when I drained my battery the other day I had a huge reading on my meter until it got a pretty good charge and now rests at about 2 amps when running.
