My '49 is real wobbly in the steering department. All the adjustment has been taken up on it. 400.00 bucks for a rebuilt box is quite steep. My question is, If the worm is bad Can a person turn a new worm gear on a lathe? It is just a modified screw isn't it? I figured that might be a cheaper way out if my father can turn one for me if neccessary.

If the thrust bearings are bad, then there will be vertical play in the shaft. In other words the shaft will move up when turning the wheel in one direction and down in the other. The shaft and the recirculating ball assembly is sold as one piece. The going price these days is $300.00 for this assembly. Usually these do not wear that much. Sector gears cost about $130.00 so $400.00 for a rebuilt unit is not bad. Happy Motoring

The worm gear does not run on the gears on the 8N tractor steering. It turns on a recirculating set of balls that are in a sort of tube and in the rack gear that meshes with the pitman gears. The top thrust bearing is more than likes the real culpret. They are notorious for failing because they never get any lubrication if you try to run oil in the gear box. It will leak out and the top bearing never gets oiled. Use grease to fill the box when and if you fix it.

The pitman arms slack is supposed to be removed on the older steering sectors like the 48 had by removing the bolts in the pitman housing and turning the whole housing to the next hole that will eleminate the slack or as much as is possible. the hole in the housing is off center or eccentric and that is what adjusts it.
