Backfiring/low power

Here's what's been done so far: new starter and bendix, tune up (at the Ford dealership), new radiator, new manifold, new battery, new plug wires, cleaning of gas tank, cleaning of carburetor. Before all this - was running fine until battery went dead and bendix broke. Now: starts pretty well, but seems to run at lower RPMs at full throttle, has low power (bogs down when I let the clutch out or engage PTO), and backfires - a lot. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Is it back firing through the the air cleaner, a popping sound?

I had the same problem and lived with it for 2 years. Found out I wired my distributor clockwise, not counter clockwise. (side mount) So, #s 1 and 4 were firing but not 2 and 3.

Certainly worth a look.

I'm with Kevin, sure sounds like firing order is wrong. A good clue is that it worked before the tune up. Going with the wrong rotation is pretty common.

Keep us posted.

Thanks guys! I'll check the wiring and firing
order. I replaced the wires one at a time, so
they're in the same order as when it returned from
the shop. However, it wasn't running so good when
it came back to me, but it wasn't backfiring.
What I'm calling backfiring actually seems to be
popping through the exhaust. Come to think about
it, that may not actually be "back fire."

I've been looking through the archives, but would
still appreciate anyone who would like to walk
(talk) me through a logical progression of
diagnostics and fixes.
