RECENTLY PURCHASED AN 8N. THE ENGINE SER. NO. IS 294020. ACCORDING TO ALL INFO THIS SHOULD BE A SIDE MOUNT DIST. IT'S A FRONT MOUNT. OTHER PARTS I HAVE PURCHASED ALL REFER TO OLDER SERIAL NOS. SUCH AS STEERING PARTS. ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED. ANY OTHER SERIAL NOS.? WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED? THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

Brian- The six-digit serial numbers were hand-stamped on a flat aprox. 1/2"w x 3"l on the left side of the engine block, and were preceded by the model number, i.e. "8N XXXXX "; and were the only identifiable markings on the tractor. Front-mount distributors were up to serial number 263844; according to my "MASTER PARTS CATALOG- 9N, 2N, 8N, NAA, 1939-1953". Could be your tractor had the engine replaced, or, as is with mine, the serial number is very difficult to read and a one could be mis-read as a four, etc. I saw an 8N for sale the other day and stopped to look at it and I could tell that someone had "re-etched" the serial number on it. Whether or not it was the real one is anyones' guess. Made me skeptical.

Any chance someone in the past has done some modifications or swapped engines?

THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSES. THE COMPLETE SER. NO. IS *8N294020*. TWO PEOPLE STATED THE TRACTOR IN QUESTION WOULD BE A 2N. IT IS DEFINITLY AN 8N NOT A 2N. RB STATED THAT POSSIBLY THE NO. IS 254020. THE DIGIT IN QUESTION LOOKS LIKE A NINE BUT IT IS SMALLER THAN THE OTHER DIGITS. IT LOOKS LIKE A STICK WITH A SMALL CIRCLE ON THE LEFT SIDE. THE OTHER NOS. ARE WELL STAMPED AND LARGER. THE NUMBER IS VERY READABLE. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. ANY OTHER HELP?

There should be a date code stamped on the engine. Also the axle trumpets have date codes. Some of the folks are more knowledgeable about the date codes.

The serial number you give would make this a 1950 8N with sidemount dist. Sidemount first ser # was 263844, could your number be misread and actually be 254020?
All 8n's have 4 speed forward, 1 reverse transmissions. Is yours a 4 speed?
let us know

You sure that you have an 8N and not a 2N?
