Don't feel too bad. The dealer I bought mine from said it was a '51 and as I found out by tracing the serial number, casting numbers etc. she's a '48 solid steel ball shifter built in January of '48. Dealer shoulda' known better since they sell quite a few of these around here. I was lucky, mine had been gone through completely and with the minor exception of blowing the water pump has been a reliable daily workhorse in spite of my knowing nothing when I bought her.

I doubt a '47 8N would be worth much more than a '51 (unless it had a very low serial number). And it sounds like you got a pretty good price if the tractor is in decent shape.

Hi Alan: Forum member John Smith has a great web site that covers the N's and has a page dedicated to how to identify the various models. You can check it out by clicking here.

Sounds to me like you paid a fair price for a working 8N with two very useful implements. For working tractors, I would say that later models are maybe worth a little more, conditions being the same. If you're talking restoration jobs, then a very early 8N may be worth more.

I'll preempt Dell (our forum's self-appointed safety preacher) here and suggest you get an Overruning Coupler (ORC) before you do any bush hogging. If you don't have an ORC and haven't used one before, you can learn all about them by clicking here.

Enjoy your 8N safely..... .Ed

Well, I prefer the 8Ns after '50. They have alot of things I like. Side mount distributor, proofmeter, script fenders, et al.

I think it matters little about the price, but given a choice for identical machines for the same price, I would take the '51.

8's were not made untill 1948. the numeber in front of the n on all n series tractors (except the NAA) is for the year the first one was produced. 9N - 1939 2N - 1942 8N - 1948

You might want to bone up on your N-Facts.
There were 37,907 8N's built in 1947.

They started selling 8N's as of july 1, 1947. the deal with Ferguson ended the day before and Ford sold the tractors himself thru the Dearborn sales system.
Good Luck
