My neighbor was mowing his lake front property that adjoins mine. He was mowing with his Kowboty 4wd and a 5' hog. (about the size of an N) By the time he realized he was stuck and wasn't going to get himself out the belly of the tractor was in the mud and the front axle was completely under the mud. Neighbor calls neighbor on his other side with late model F350 4x4 diesel and they proceed to get the truck down 'til the frame was solid in the mud. I tried to pull them out with the 850 but just could not get enough traction to do the job. The end result was a big ol' wrecker with a loooong cable and the winch brought them out one at a time. If these guys would have had the common sense to stop and evaluate where they were and what they were doing I think I could have pulled each of them out but they buried both machines. Remember this when the wheels start to spin and you are not making movement. It is a whole lot easier to pull something out than it is to pull up and out of the mud. fwiw,
ray

My crazy neighbor, the one with more money than brains, was trying to remove cattails from his pond with the FE loader of his brand new Boomer. Guess what went in the pond? Tee Hee. His wife had to pull him out with his old 2N that's been gathering dust since he got the new toy. I offered him a big ol tractor inner tube to put around the Boomer in case he gets near the water again. After rescueing his minivan and the 2N from the snow and ice last winter with my loaded tire 8N, I was hoping he'd figger out where to go and where not to. Touching wood. Steve 8N 169302

Ray:

Good advice. I don't know what kind of braking system those rice-burner tractors have, but the first thing I do (after raising the attachment) is brake the spinning wheel a bit. This sometimes will trick the differential into sending torque to the other (unstuck, hopefully) wheel.

Yes, a tractor will crawl through a lot more than a 4-by, but there's a lot of variables. The type of muck you're in has a lot to do with whether you'll get out or not (we've got a lot of clay here in Western NY). Weight on the wheels is another variable.

One thing to be careful of is flipping the tractor over backward, or sideways, especially with a tricycle front end. Safety first... don't be too embarassed to ask for a yank even if you're not stuck that bad.

Just my thoughts.

I live on Bowen Road... kinda the "main drag" in Elma (population about 12,500, maybe a little more).

Elma's about 20 miles Southeast of downtown Buffalo. Borders are Lancaster to the North, East Aurora to the South, West Seneca & Orchard Part to the West, and Marilla to the East.

We're about as close to Buffalo as you can get while still being somewhat rural. We're building up fast, unfortunately.

Three months ago I redid my rear bearings and brakes. Took the loaded tires off and on by myself (6', 270lbs). It is not really that hard. Make sure you have everything ready to place and store them before you start loosening bolts! They are dangerous if you let them get off balance so I always make sure that there is somewhere close (and strong enough) to lean them. Several years ago I took them off and loaded them onto my pickup by myself then when the work was done unloaded and put them back on the tractor. Just think before you do anything. An extra hand would never hurt.

Don't ride the guy too hard. Many of us farm boys got our educations about spinning wheels by being stuck, probably more than once. It used to be an annual ritual for me trying to get into wet fields to plow. But it is fun to see someone not so informed let the mud (or snow)fly and then ask (expect) you to pull them out with an N. I'm still trying to convince my own son (now 30) that I can take my 8N places he can't go with his 4x4 and that if I can't go with it, he better stay out!

When his tires started to spin did he think to lift up the mower or did he wait until he was cast iron in mud before he did that?

Ray I agree with what you say.

But I also have a question for the board. When it comes to trucks/cars isn't it dangerous to spin the tires...don't they heat up and risk blowing out or exploding?...plus it has to take off a bit of tread?

Any safety thoughts here Dell?

Thanks.

Sal..... slippin tires and spinnin tires different things.

They pay univerisity professers to determine the optimium tire slip onna those big 4WD rigs. Kinda a formula between, time to do the job plowing, wear and tear on equipment, tires, engines, fuel costs, how much ya pays the driver, the interest rates in Tim-Buck-Tuu. Ennyways, the optimium tire slip is 8%. They now have radar ground speed speedometers to help 'em determine when slipping too much.

If'n ya high center onna yer frame and spinna way, yeah, tires gonna get hot, melt rubber, throw tread, could eventually blow. But it'll take some time to get there.

I 'member out inna Utah, early fifties, surveying, came up upon a stuck Pontiac Stationwaggon inna a sandy wash. Doctor feller been rockin' back anna forth with his "Hydromatic" trying to get unstuck, burned out his tranny. We hauled him out with new Dodge military looking PowerWagon. Found out even the Dodge had a broken frontaxle spring which explained why it didn't steer too good. Course, we was boon-dockin' it, running survey lines for uranium mine mineral claims and weren't goin' fast ennyways.

Made an impression on me as a youngster but got some quality daddy time with my ol'man. That trip, I learned ya didn't hav' ta drown everything in catchupp like did at home eating maw's cookin' (grin)..... ...Dell

I doubt spinning in mud causes much, if any, heat.
The tires are in water...

Sal, you have been watching too much television. Seriously though, this is true for cars but I would question the tractor tire spinning fast enough to get hot. Sure, you might tear tread off but tractor tires are designed knowing they are going to spin or slip. My point is that when you are failing to make forward movement it is time to stop and evaluate the situation. Spinning the wheels will get you no where faster. (pun intended)
