Ok I figured I'd ask the guys on this board because we have such a diverse group of guys. We have a 98 Camaro with a 3.8 ltr 6. We have it a few months and it's been fine. All of a sudden when hot it runs terrible. It misses and bucks when stepping hard on the gas. If it's cold it's ok. If you get it hot and shut it off for a few minutes then restart, it's real bad. We changed the fuel filter hoping it was that. No luck. We'er waiting for a manual to get specs. It is injected. It has 45 lbs of fuel pressure at the engine when running, about 10 when off. I figured it was the distributor cap , guess what, there is none. I may have to buy one of those error code gizmo's. Any ideas?

My thoughts:

'98... you've got an emissions warranty for 10 yrs. or 100,000 miles... let Chevy look it over and fix it for free if it is an emissions part.

Probably EGR carbon deposits, etc.

Might be throttle body gummed up.

Might be oxygen sensor (my '98 Chevy just needed one at less than 15,000 miles).

Might be airflow sensor.

Might be bad gas... we've had a lot of problems with bad gasoline in my parts this summer... we really don't know what's going on with the gas supplies... maybe their special summer blend is bad?

Good luck. That's a nice car (I had an '82 Camaro).

Richard, this particular engine has a really bad reputation with regards to its fuel pumps. However, when they go, then generally go all the way over the edge with no warning. Is yours particularly noisy? They are expensive to replace, too. Around $400 I believe.

Good luck with it..... .Ed

I don't hear the pump at all. I had good pressure, or what I think is good pressure 10 lbs at the test port on the engine. It looks like an a/c fill port on the tube that goes to the injectors. When I started the car it then went to 45 lbs. I'm waiting on the chilton book to see if I'm in spec. We also ran down the tank and filled with fresh gas thinking we had a bad batch. No such luck. It's my sons first car and he's going nuts trying to figure it out. Lots of ambition very little experience.

Could be a few things but the most common for the symptoms you have is the EGR system.

I agree that it is most likely an EGR problem. The EGR system is off until the engine warms up, then the computer turns it on. If you are familiar with how the EGR system works, you may be able to find the problem without using the computer code reader by checking to see if everything is clean, no vacuum lines pulled off, etc. Otherwise a code reader is your best bet at finding which system to troubleshoot.
