Need Auxillary Transmission Cable OR???

I have a 48 8N with an aux transmission. The trans is controlled by a cable that goes to a door knob size black knob on the right side of the dash. Since I have owned the tractor this cable was not usable because it was rusted solid in the out position (hi I believe). I now have the engine out and mustered the courage to cut off the rusted part of the cable. I now have what appears to be a functional 2 speed (plus neutral) transmission but no way to control it.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement cable or lever conversion kit for this trans?

BTW. I suspect it is a Sherman trans but am not sure. Any comments??

Thanks for the help.

I have one of these too. Mine works -- at least for now. It's not a Sherman (the Shermans I know of have a lever on the left side of the tractor, not a pull knob on the dash).

I don't know who made my aux.trans., and I've asked on this board a couple of times about it. If you can get it repaired, you will get overdrive, but not underdrive. It will similarly affect your PTO speed. I use mine in high only to go to town for gas (about a mile and a half). In my opinion, you will not gain much for this, so if you can somehow remove it, rather than fix it per se, you won't be missing much.

If you find out who made it, or any more info about it, I'd like to know, but I don't think it's a great asset on my tractor anyway.

Your transmission is indeed a Sherman. If you can find a nosepiece with lever off of a junk Sherman you can swap it onto yours and have the lever instead of the cable.

REALLY? Not sure what the nosepiece is, but the cable runs into the right side of the housing, whereas all Sherman levers I've seen so far are on the left.

Is there a secret way to make this thing do underdrive by any chance?

Good to know - I'm really surprised to say the least. Thanks.

Brent

This is for a Hi-Low Sherman, but thought you might like to look at it.

Many of those cables were Morse Cables, if you have access to anyone that is into boat repair they will have a Morse Catalog. The cables have not changed much over the years and you will have to make it up from kits or parts. Sounds difficult but is a piece of cake to a good cable fabricator.
