Hey Pilot! WE HAVE NO MAIN JET IN THE CARB???????

I have been following the fabulous rebuild article by Don8NAZ on the carb and I got to the main nozzle and main jet removal - got the nozzle out with the 1/4" deep socket - but ALAS THE MAIN JET IS NOT IN THE CARB! There is NO MAIN JET in the threads to remove. It is empty. Now I am assuming that it is supposed to be in the deepest part (center) of the large hole where the nozzle was located - I can see the threads for it, but nothing!

Unfortunately my kit did not come with the jets, so I guess I am SOL until I get a couple replacement jets.

It goes without question, but would the problems I have been having (stalls under load - cannot adjust idle/mix screws) coincide with not having the main jet?

Thanks in advance.
Andy

over in the article archives of this board is a well illustrated article titled step by step carb overhaul. since it appears that your carb was rebuilt on free beer day at the overhaul shop it might be worth the half an hour it takes to browse this article to make sure a main jet is all you are missing. just goes to prove that N series engines will run with lots of things wrong. to crossed plug wires we now can add missing main jets.

Yeah, I used the fabulous in-depth step-by-step carb rebuild guide in the archives by DON8NAZ. It was clear and very helpful. Interesting thing I found also in the archives are comments made by Zane about known problems with main jets Zane even saying that he has yet to find a main jet in the carbs and stating that the main jet is usually not removable...Can someone explain this to me??

Upon daylight inspection I do see some down below the main nozzle but there are no screwdriver notches if it is a seat for the main jet. I can I identify if this is the main jet and if it is damaged then how do I attempt to get it out?

I let the entire carb (as recommended by the carb guide) to soak for an extremely long time. We shall see if I can truly determine if this is the main jet down there or perhaps just the threads for the nozzle. I will let you guys know.

I have posted the archive comments by Dell and Zane for review...

I have had a zillion of these carburetors apart over the past 40 years and if their is a brass jet with a screw driver slot in it I have never seen one.

I would take the spring off and try turning it in till it bottoms and see if you think it still has a few threads left to go. If it does and when you get it back together you can't lean it enough remove some of the spring and try it again.

I think that all their is to the main jet is a machined taper in the bottom of the carburetor just below the end of the high speed fuel nozzle and not removable.

Doubt I could improve on the carb rebuild article. It shows a main jet in a couple of places and the last Marvel I had apart had one. On the other hand, I ain't gonna a) tease the bull; b) tug on superman's cape; c) argue with Zane/Dell

Glad to hear that you found something..sometimes finding the problem is 99% and fixing it is 1%. We had a gas powered 2 ton truck that would act like it was running out of gas. Went the whole route on it including replacing all filters , fuel pump, carb kit, scrubbed the inside of the tank, back blew the lines with compressed air. Still had to tow it in twice. Sometimes dropping a little gas in the carb would get it going and she would run for a week or so then die out on the road. Finally found a yellow jacket in the fitting on top of the tank where the lines connect it was stuck in there acting like a check valve and shutting off the gas flow. Man I was glad to find it cause by this time I was getting real frustrated. I have tried to get the jet that you are talking about and have had no sucess as all the ones I try are stuck in there hard.Clean it out well before putting the new one in..Big Mike

Now Andy:

Its always good to find a big problem so
easily solved But Don't skimp on the cleaning of the passages and setting every thing just right.

Good news though!!!!

I always love fixing a problem so obvious.
Then I KNOW it fixed it.

I just hate when I work on something and don't know WHY it runs better not really sure of what I fixed but I "THINK" I fixed it,
then you are never sure of what the problem is and if it will come back.
