Our old (17 yrs) 12hp B&S Craftsman lawn mower sent various parts of engine through the engine walls today. It needs a 38" deck (welded/patched too many times- getting like paper and unsafe) and now a new engine. Figure it's time to break down and buy a new one.

I'm in process of getting a finish mower (maybe belly) for my 8N. However, need another for tight places in the yard. As I try to make decision I'm trying to decide which engine to get. Prices are similar for approx 17 HP:

B&S
B&S IC
B&S IC twin cylinder
Kohler
Kohler Pro

Appreciate any feedback. Have to get on soon.

I vote for the B&S V2! I have 2 of them(mower & generator) and they work hard and long. My Dad always swore..... ...that the Koler engines had to be rebuilt sooner.
PS: He knew what he was talking about.

I would chose the Kohler Pro or a Briggs Intek twin with full pressure lubrication and spin on oil filter. They are both very decent engines. Mind you, if you got that many years out of a plain-jane Briggs, that is good too.
