Yes, it's an excellent idea.

In this motor especially, where the oil pump can be slow to prime, you want to pack the pump and the pickup tube full of this - this will generate suction from the instant the motor starts to turn and get the pump primed PDQ.

But in all areas of the assembly, assembly lube and lots of it is a good idea and cheap insurance against startup damage. It doesn't hurt to pump or pour lots of engine oil in there as well.

It will smoke some when you start it - BFD - and it will all dissolve in the oil - but you'll be changing the oil and filter after an hour's running anyway - right?

llater,

I used assembly lube when putting my engine back together. Also, before I put the plugs in, I spun the engine long enough to get oil pressure. I then put plugs in and started it. It's running great now!

Our shop uses assembly lube whenever the engine is expected to be sitting around for more than a week and it cannot be prelubed (rotating the pump with a drill to lube the engine just prior to start-up). If it is going to be started within a week of build up a liberal smathering of 30W oil to the journals of the crank, rods and cam will suffice. As one post pointed out don't forget to prelube the pump and also the cam lobes. If a new cam and lifters are being used assembly lube to the cam lobes is crucial.

Good Luck

Go easy on the white assembly lube (Lubriplate), just enough to coat the bearings, cam followers, etc. Too much and it will collect in the oil filter canister, even though it is supposed to melt at operating temperatures of the oil.

I,used white lithum grease for years .Then I,rebuilt several diesel engines that sat for several months in storage and had a problem with rod and main bearings with the acid from fringer prints .Now I, WANT USE ANY THING BUT ENGINE ASSEMBLY LUBE NO MORE PROBLEMS . Also no dry barings when you start up.

You also want to pack the oil pump full with assembly lube to prime it.

A dry start is the worst thing you can do for a new engine. Assembly lube is the way to go.

I've never put any engine together without it.
Just MHO.
