My 8n has only 3rd gear. It doesn't even have neutral, when the gear shift is in neutral, it is 3rd gear. If I shift it into any gear including reverse it won't go anywhere, it just boggs the motor down. Any ideas??

I had a similiar problem with my 8N. Sounds like your shift rod has become disconnected from your shift fork. The first and third gears are shifted with the same rod. There is a tapered set screw that holds the fork to the rod. It has a lock nut on top, but probably just came out and fell to the bottom of the tranny. The shift fork is simply stuck in third. Your reverse rod is still working. When you shift into reverse, you are actually in a forward and reverse gear at the same time. This explains why the engine just bogs down. Pull the cover off, drain enough oil to see the first/third shift fork. If the screw is missing, a magnetic pickup tool and a little patience will locate it for you.
Any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Pop the cover off and see what's going on with the shifter, shift rails and cogs. It's possible that the end of the shifter has broken off or the shift gate is worn to where the thing won't index. Don't lose the shift rail detent spring that's in the hole under the tab at the back edge of the cover.
