Well the time has come and I think I need a tractor. Small acerage owner. So, I have some questions. I am going to look at a 9n this weekend. Price is $1750. From what I can tell thats not a bad price for this area (eastern nebraska). So, being a total idiot about tractors
I have some basic questions.

1. Will it do the job for me ? After last winter
I need something that can move snow. Will an n tractor do that.

2. I need to grade my drive. Can an n do that ?

3. What should I be checking out when looking at
a tractor ?

Anything else I should know ? Remember, I am tractor impaired.

Thanks
Randy

Beware: Be prepared to spend time/talent/money keeping the N running. Reading this board for while will show you the common problems that seem to plague most Ns to some extent. This board, a good manual, and the archives of this board are invaluable tools to keeping your N running, but you need to be willing to spend the time working on it (or paying someone else to). Tools needed are common, and parts aren't too expensive. The desire and available time you must decide. Then there's the frustration that comes when the N quits/fails/breaks JUST when you need it the most. I'm learning to deal with that as part of my therapy. 8^) Ns can be fun and useful tools, but they generally need some TLC to keep them going. Just be prepared before you buy. That's my 2¢. Randy....I was in the same boat as you a few years back. My dad owned an 8n so I kinda knew what I wanted. "My toy" has a wagner loader. N's aren't really made for them but my situation required one. I just take my time and try not to beat on it. If you get a 2n/9n, get the zane thang. I couldn't believe the difference it made. Also get an fo-4 manual and an orc for pto work. For the most part, they are simple to work on and every part I needed was available, either at my local napa or from one of the sponsors of this great board. LOTS of info in the archives!!!!! LOTS of great info from the particpants of this board and not always 'N' related. The best discussion group i've found.

N tractors do have their limitations but I have been able to work around them more times than not.

We own a 1952 8N. If you don't already know, the numbers mean: 9N started in 1939
2N started in 1942
8N started in 1948
The best ones are the 51 and 52 8N's (the last two years they were made) They have a better ignition system. If it's in good running order, 1750 is a decent price for a 9N. An 8n for around 2500 may be a better bet.

I, too, was a total tractor idiot not too long ago. Now I'm just merely dense. What I do know I learned from this and other websites. As for your questions:

1. Yes a 9N will move snow. Hopefully someone will post a pic of their N doing just that. You will probably want a Zane Thang to overcome the lack of position control.

2. Yes a 9N will grade dirt. Again, get a Zane Thang.

3. Check these sites and get educated before spending your money:
Nseries.com
Smith's 8N page (be sure to check the N Identifier page)
Tyler's 9N page
Vintage Ford Tractor Resource Mostly dedicated to the later Ford tractors, but still gives good insight into the history of these machines.
Good luck and check back with us after you buy one!

Well, I'll probably get disagreement here, but knowing what I know now, I would look for an 8n. It has position control and an extra speed. I would also look for one with a Sherman over-under trans. ( Note: I own a 2n.) That's..... my $.02.

I would vote for the 8N also. I also would look for a 1951 or 52 that would have the better steering box, side mount dist. and the better rear axle seals. The price really doesn't seem to vary that much between them. You can convert some things on the older ones, but that is money and work. "Ns" are a good little tractor, but not big enough to do what some people expect them to. Just my nickle.
