Hey guys! I've been off the forum for a while, but I thought you'd be interested in knowing that after replacing the keyswitch, installing 2-gauge battery cables, replacing all the wires that looked corroded and weathered, and giving the 6V battery a good charge, my '51 8N now starts up within a few seconds of the first crank and purrs like a kitten! It is now moving under its own power for the first time since May 12th (the week after I bought it!)

Also, I have no more problem with the gears grinding when I engage them; after looking at the I&T manual and realizing my clutch was far out of adjustment, I've taken care of that problem. Question: to bring it back into adjustment as recommended in the manual, I had to tighten the turnbolt as far as it will go; does that mean next time the clutch needs adjusting I'll have to replace the whole clutch?

Andy

Sometimes the rod itself becomes distorted. Would it be advisable to remove it and stortened by bending back into proper shape and length?

When the clutch disc wears down the pedal comes up. Not down. When the throwout bearing wears the clutch pedal goes down. Their will be lots of noise when the pedal is depressed if there is anything wrong with the throw out bearing.

Their is another thing that will make the pedal go down and that is the little lever at the end of the clutch throw out bearing rod on the side of the clutch housing where the turn buckle is attlahed. Carefully inspect where this lever is attached to the rod that turns the throwout bearing. It can be cracked on the under side and be very hard to see sometimes but it will definaltly make the pedal begin to be ineffective. The first time you may be able to adjust to it but not the next time.

I have replaced the clutch looking to fix a low pedal only to find later that the problem was this lever beginning to try to break off.
