An aluminum dash arrived on Monday from a fella who had one sitting in his barn for a number of years. Seems like he purchased it for a fellow tractor enthusiast several years ago but the friend never showed up to purchase it.

It's now sitting on my bench and it's a dandy.

Looks like the ol' 9N restoration is taking another step forward and the remaining list of original parts is shorter now thanks to William.

Let's see..... .. what's left to find is a left bucket for C.M. HAll lights, original working gauges, battery hold down, and the dummy ignition light for the dash.

Questions that perplex me is the generator type for a mid-year 1940 9N. I have both types sitting on my shelf (the small and larger generator), and smooth rear hubs or hot riveted rear hubs. From what I can tell from photos those items are difficult to determine when they showed up during the assembly line and consequently what dates or range of serial numbers they were added on or phased out.

Anyways, just an update for those following my progress over the past year and a half on this 9N restoration.

I hope to do a purist no-no, and buff and polish just the flat of the 9N dash for a close to mirror like look. Although not a standard cosmetic thing on the originals I kind of like the idea of adding some of my own originality to this project.

And I did see a photo of an early 9N that Henry Ford ordered to polish the front hubs, rear hubs, dash, and hood. It was done this way for a publicity photo opportunity. 9n'er

9N'er,
Glad you finally got a good dash! I think it'll look good all polished up.

Two things-
1) You mention a dummy light. Is this for the 12V conversion?

2) This is a pair of the Stewart-Warner Classic series guages in my '41's dash. My original ones were chrome, but I'm sure you could paint 'em black.

Have fun polishing!

Mikey

9n'er, that is great news. My grandfather's 1940 9N was a mid-year model (purchased in June), and the ignition switch keyhole on his tractor is on the lower left. I believe lower right holes were on early 1940 9Ns. Anyway, you should feel proud that you're getting closer to complete originality. I'm trying to do the same thing -piece at a time until it all eventually comes together.

9'ner.....have been thinking of you with all these forest fires raging.....you gave that up, I hope, right? I have never met you, but it doesn't mean I don't worry.

It's about time you found one (dash) Mine has a bunch of hole that all look factory. There is the two guage holes, a choke hole on the right, the key hole on the left, and then one hole with flat sides on the lefft of the steering column kinda tucked under things, and one further down. I put my key on the left side opposite the choke, and someone had drilled a hole for a light swich next to the choke. That hole I am sure is not original.

But I am curious as to what holes your dash has, and where you think the key should go.

take Care
steve

Steve,

been hunkering down from the fire scene...been doing it since my twenties...at 42 it's a "young man's" game (and young-woman's game too) now. time to hang up the fire pack and boots.

dash: holes on the left dash are:

ammeter, ignition dummy light, light switch, and on lower left dash: keyswitch hole.

right dash: choke pull and oil gauge.

that should be all that is required.

Earlier dashes have different locations for the key switch - on the right ash for example.

or key switch on the flat of the left dash.

Steel dashes have the keyswitch located on the upper steering column.

Hope all is well. been a weird summer. hot and dry here in northern New England.

I have 1940 9N15881. My Al. dash is very screwed up. Many extra holes, probably due to a temporary bolt-on reinforcing strap. Both edges of my dash have been broken off and welded back together.
My ignition switch is on the left side, off the flat dash surface, down low on the steering column area. My choke is also off the dash and down on the right side of the steering column. A nice place for it, but I assume it is not the original place.
I would sure like to see a picture of your dash. I intend to have mine rewelded and have the extra holes filled. I'll send you some pictures of my dash directly to your e-mail address.
