When I checked the owner's manual on my brushhog about gearbox lube I expected to see 90 weight as being recommended. Surprise---the recommended lubricant is NLGI 0000 Grease --- Anyone familiar with this stuff???? TIA

I have been using multipurpose gun grease in the bush hog gear boxes for over 40 years in every brand and style.

The reason for this is that if an old wird fence etc is wound up on the shaft behind the stump jumper the seal will be cut out almost instantly and the oil will be dumped. Then it is just a matter of time until the whole thing is destroyed from the lack of lubrication.

When grease is in the gear box you can run for a long time without even having a bottom seal in the gearbox because the viscosity of the grease will not allow it to drain out and their will most always be enough lubrication to save the bearings etc from damage.

Maybe the grease will help the noise coming from my old brush hog? I thinks the bearings need to be replaced.
