I have a chance to buy a 6 cly Funk conversion. It is all original, barn kept, faded but no rust or dents. Started right up, no smoke, hyrd work well, oils look good. Is it worth $3000 & my 8N that needs to be rebuilt, sheet medal, and paint?

Your opinions appreciated.

Sam

Sam: This is a pretty good buy if this is a good Funk conversion. But, is this what you want and need? First, Make sure it is a good Funk conversion. Look for identification on the engine that lets you know this is an industrial engine rather than some old junker motor.

The good Funks are sought after by collectors, but I think they could be a nuisance today if you want a "using" tractor and you are not mechanically inclined. It is hard enough to get parts, service and expertise for an 8N. If you like to chase around the country for parts and pieces, as I do, then a Funk may be for you.

If the thing didn't start one day, where would you go for parts? ("You gotta what!!!???")

If you need a working tractor, consider spending the same amount on your 8N. You'll have an excellent machine.

I'd like to have a Funk; then I'd be 3fordsmike

Sam: Got your email today, but your return address is incorrect. This Funk is for you! Go for it. But consider NOT repainting it if it is as original as you indicate. The original ones are getting scarce! Wish it were mine! 2fordsmike

He wants $3,000 AND your 8N? Seems a bit steep unless the thing has been rebuilt itself. They are probably somewhat rare, but not that rare. You sure it is a Funk and not a homebuilt? Hmmm...

So it seems that he is asking about the equivalent of $4,500 to $5,500? If that is OK by you go for it! I agree you don't see them that often in above average shape. If you get it, let us know more about your experience with it.
