I have a 49 8N that wont start. Worked fine a couple of weeks ago and now just gives a singular click when I hit the starter. Battery is fully charged. No cranking no attempt to start. any suggestions?

Sounds to me as if the starter gear may be jammed trying to engage the ring gear. Can you turn the engine at all with the fan? This has happened to us when the ring gear gets worn and needs to be replaced. If the engine won't turn we used to free it by putting the pto in gear and the transmission in high and turning the pto shaft counterclockwise with a big Stilson wrench after slipping an old universal on the shaft to protect it. Sometimes could free it by putting the tractor in gear and manually rocking it. Once had to loosen the two bolts holding the starter on a little, don't take them off, and prying the starter off the ring gear housing with a screwdriver driven into the joint. I think the first method is easiest on the machinery. If this is your problem best to order up a new ring gear. Best of luck!

Check your battery cables.

If mine are loose, I will get a single "snap" from the pos. terminal on the battery, and then nothing.

Best idea is to check ALL elctrical connections, batery cables, groud to block, starter solenoid, and then the starter, take them all loose(battery cables first) then clean with a wire brush to remove any corrosion, then reinstall all cables, make sure they're tight, that oughtta do it for you!
