I have a problem with my 8N ford ,Front mount distributor, I get no spark to the #2 cylinder/pug. I have put on new coil, new distributor, checked compression, new plug wire and still no spark. The other 3 plugs fire just fine.
I have had this tractor for several years and has ran great until last year when it started to act up after it ran for about 20 to 30 minutes. That problem was the coil. It ran fine after the new coil Then this spring it started to miss on one cylinder and it has me confused as to the solution to this problem, any suggestions?

This is Ron again. I have already done a compression check, reads about 100 psi, replaced the plugs, also switched the new plug from # 2 cylinder to # three cylinder. The plugs are all good. Also have new wires, coil, and distributor.
All other cylinders have a good spark, but number two is dead,no spark at all. I have not moved the tractor since I put the new distributor on and the tractor is sitting onlevel concrete floor so even if the king pin is bad it has had no chance to crack the new dist. Any other ideas??

I would try a different wire in place of the dead one. It could be the wire end is not on correctly but using a known good wire as a temporary subsitute would also tell you if the cap and plug are ok. I've had new parts that were faulty right out of the box so I wouldn't be surprised if the wire is the problem. The next suspect would be the cap.

Hope this helps.

I don't know how you are determining that the plug is not firing but have you considered that you could have a sticking exhaust valve or a burned exhaust valve?

Do a compression check on it.

If you don't have a compression tester just put a finger over the plug hole and turn the engine over. If you can hold the compression in with your finger you have poor comression on that cylinder. Be sure to tie the plug wire back out of the way when testing it this way so you don't get the fire shocked out of you!

Yep, I think BJ hit the culprit. I lost number 2 twice before I figured out what was happening. Broke #2 again, but epoxied it back. Since it didn't break internally, this worked. Gotta fix that kingpin bushing someday. For now, I just watch out for high ground coming up fast on my right.

Dumb question, have you tried a differnet plug?

if there is excessive play in the front end it will let you know about it by breaking the distributor cap around number two plug on the front mount distributors.
