This is probably too late, but you should look here for a photo of where to look for the serial number as well as other tips for identifying an N series tractor. Good Luck!

get on the side of the engine by the oil filter. On the engine block, near the head, to the right of the oil filter, you will find a flat machined rectangle. Stamped on this rectangle you will find the serial number. Please note that it was a common maintenance procedure to simply swap out motors so the SN only gives you the number of the engine block, which may not be the original.

However, cast onto the starter housing, below the serial number, you will find the casting date code for the tractor's gearbox housing. The first character will be a letter. The letter corresponds to the month (A=january, B=february, etc.) and then two digits representing the last two numbers of the year. You can also find the same casting date code on the right axle housing, as read fronm the engine sid of the axle.

Provided I'm reading this right, there is a plate that reads H21 1 right behind the starter on the engine block. With that info I should throw a bday party for my 50 yr old 8n. Doesn't look a day over 30. I have a question. My dist cap retaining clip rubs the bottom of the coil when timed right. There is no room to move the coil up. the coil wire is rubbing the tank now. (I put anti-chaffing tape on the coil to prevent an explosion.) Is this not right!TFTH (thanks for the help)

Today would be the day to have a birthday party for your engine block. Look around, you might find other party days on your rear axle trumpets and, oh yeah, crawl under the hydraulic reservoir and clean the crud off the cover near the drain plug...ta da! another party day!

Look at the headings to the left under research Info. There is a site giving SERIAL NUMBERS and you can tell from that.
