Does anybody sell just a cheap conversion bracket to put a late GM alternator on an 8n? Also, can I just run to the battery and the starter and not need to use a ballast resistor or worry about the bat. being originally pos. ground? Thanks.

Paul..... Ref: grounding. Your 12 volt alternator requires negative ground, therefore you must have a negative grounded battery. Starter don't care, positive, negative ground, still turns over the same direction only faster. Amp meter don't care, but if you care wheather needle pointing negative means charging the battery, then it does matter. If you have the original inductive loop amp meter, change the direction of the wire going through the loop. If it is a replacement amp meter, swap the lead connections. Sparkplugs don't care. Ignition coil kinda cares, theroritically anyways. If you got a front mount coil/distributor you can't do anything about anyways. If ya got the later sidemount 8N, then you can do something about it, there should be a molded in minus sign or neg terminal indication of some sorts, connect this terminal to ground through the ignition points and obviously the other terminal (positive) should go to the battery positive through the ignition switch.

And what John sez is correct about the ballast resistor. Putting 12 volts on a 6 volt coil is asking for Trubble with a capital T. I personally would change to a 12 volt coil anyways because of better insulation and hotter sparkies, that way you don't need a voltage dropping resistor..... .Dell

Starter is OK with 12V. Must use resistor on coil wire, General part #RU-100, $6.00. Also diode in exciter wire, Rat Shack 1A, 50V, $0.49.

I have made up some brackets and tensioners for front mount distributor Ns. $28, includes shipping.
