I am thinking about puting guage on my 8N (1948, I think). How is the best way to mount it? What would be normal operating temp? What would be the highest it could be without hurting anything?

PL,

Dave's way is one of the several ways to put in a gage. Someone put one in my Uncle's 8N, see link below. You should also look at the next image at my Photopoint link since it shows the location of the gage in a '52 kerosene burner. I don't know for sure since I haven't seen a kerosene burner except in a book, BUT I'd bet that they had their temperature gage bulb in the head at the same location as my Uncle's 8N.

Regards,
Larry

Hi Larry, My head did not have that boss on it or I would have gone the way you'rs is. I forgot to mention that with a electrical gauge you need 12 volts.

Dave,
The picture doesn't show it well, but there is NO boss where the bulb is located. Don't know how it was done, who did it, but it would have been something my Dad could have done, even with NO boss. I am not sure I'd know how to do it.
Some day I should take the bulb out and look at the hole to see if I can tell how it was put in the head.
Regards,
Larry

I was afraid to try that. With my luck I would hit an internal rib or something and cobble the head. If you do take the sensor out let me know how thick the casting is there.

PL, I installed a tempature gauge on my 48, 8N.
I got a electrical gauge from J C Whitney number 81RJ1911R. I got a copper tee 1 1/4 X 1 1/4 X 1/2
I threaded the fitting into the 1/2" side and soldered it there. I also soldered a ground tab on the tee. Had to make another 2" hole in dash for the gauge. It works good. My engine gets up to 165 deg. and stays there.

It is a new 160 thermostat you know modern production. The new gauge could be calabrated a tad off also. The sensor is about 2 inches ahead of the thermostat. But I think I can live with it.
