This tractor ran well for 2 weeks. It suddenly quit...right now. Put new points and condenser in it, it ran for about 2 hrs, then quit.Fiddled with front mount distributor, ran for 20 min then quit. Got gas. I noticed the amp meter was charging heavily before it quit. Has a 12v alternator,I suspect not hooked up quite right. I can not find a coil on it. Magneto? Screwed up? I am obviously mechanically challenged. Could use any suggestions!!!!!

Probably is the coil now. Sounds like you have a charging problem that may have put too much voltage in your electrical system. I would try to get that fixed first. Coils don't come cheap and you may ruin another one if you don't fix your charging problem first. Take a volt reading at the post on top of the coil with the engine stopped, points closed and key on. Post this reading and the experts here will know whether it is a 6 volt coil or a 12 volt. This needs to be determined to tell you what the resistors should be.

hi 49er, it sounds like your coil could be going bad. it is the black thing attached to the top of your distrubeter. classic symptoms of a bad coil is when it gets hot it quits then runs fine after it cools till it gets hot again. there are folks here who are much more knowlgeable than me about electrics ,like Dell. i'm a bit electrically challenged but thats my guess. good luck
