Along with my 8n, I have an 841. The 8n starts in a snap, but the 841 cranks and cranks and cranks before it fires. When it fires, she blows some black smoke, and smoothes out and runs smooth as silk. Shut it off, and it starts right back up quick...Only have problems with the first start of the day, after that it runs great even if not fully warmed up. Replaced all the ignition components about a year ago (except wires, which appear good) and that seemed to help for a while. Any ideas would be appreciated.

PS I always keep the fuel line shut off.

Thanks

I have the same problem with an 860, after the first start it, it will start ok all day. The first time you start it, you have to give it a whiff of starting fluid or pull the rubber air cleaner hose off of the carb. and choke it by hand.
I supect the problem is a to weak of spring on the choke releaf valve. If you find the answer please post it.

If it's smoking black on start up, it may be that you have a leaking float bowl causing it to burn rich at first (causing the hard start). I'd bet it's a really slow leak. Try sutting the fuel off, and then letting it run for a minute before shutting it off. See if it starts easier.

Take Care
Steve

I would give it a shot of starting fluid and see if it fires right away, if so then I would say its fuel related. Noting you shut off fuel valve, which might mean you have a slow fuel supply. My .01 worth
