THE LEFT/RIGHT SIDE PAPER GASKETS MUST BE CUT TO LENGTH AT CRANKSHAFT JOURNALS.WHERE IS THE PROPER PLACE TO CUT GASKET WHERE IT MEETS THE ROPE SEAL. DOES IT EXTEND BETWEEN ROPE ENDS UP TO JOURNAL (REAR)ARE SHOULD IT BE TRIMMED DIFFERENTLY. I HAVE HAD TROUBLE IN STOPPING A REAR SEAL LEAK WITH ORIGINAL CRANKSHAFT AND NOW WITH A REPLACEMENT SHAFT. SUSPECT, I AM INSTALLING GASKET INCORRECTLY.

I have installed several hundred oil pan gaskets on N engines over the past 40 odd years and I have never had to cut one yet. I never heard of cutting the ends of the gasket. It goes to the edge of the main journal.

The only time I have ever seen the rear main seal retainer removed was when the block was to be vatted to remove crud etc. I have never removed one just to rebuild the engine. Why remove it is it is just sitting there minding it's own business? Maybe if you suspected a leaking one but that would be the only time to remove one except for vatting. The reason they are removed for vatting is the stuff a block is vatted in will eat aluminum. Then I would use silicone glue to reseal and not permatex NOT NEVER. That stuff was wonderful 30 years ago before the advent of silicone but not now. I have spent hours digging that stuff off various gasket surfaces where it didn't need to be in the first place. Not to mention having to remove part with a hammer and sharpened wood chisel etc.

I was always taught, and it seems to work, to cut the gasket ends a little so that the two ends of the rope seal meet each other without interference from the paper gasket. Just make sure you don't leave a gap between the rope seals and the oil pan gasket. Also, cut off the rope seals (1/16"?) a little long so that when you tighten down the bearing cap and really squeeze the seals into the groove, they don't pull away from each other and leave a gap. I also had an oil leak when I bought my tractor. I learned when I tore it down that someone before me had not permatexed the rear oil seal retainer ring, and that was where at least a lot of the oil was coming from. My $.02.
