I have a 49 8N. Could anyone tell me if there were any changes made in the 49' 8n compared to the older 47 and 48 8N's. I am thinking on buying a manual dated 1948 and I am wondering if I should or not. For the price of $50.What is your opion?

Hi Robert. Forum member John Smith has developed a great site dedicated to identifying the various models of N's. You can check it out by clicking here.

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

The major differences will be the distributor, front vs. side, and the steering gear box. The '48 will have a front dist. like your '49. And I'm pretty sure they both have the same steering box.

What is the serial number on the left side of the engine ?
If it is an early 49, I think it is rather similar to the 48.

It is a very late 49 because 50 model started at 245637. I do not have my manuals close to my desk, but the proofmeter was added at ca. sn 290271 and side mounted distributor at ca. sn 263844(I got this info from the web, not from the service manuals !).
I guess that a 1948 manual will be fine for your 49 tractor. Some manuals like I & T cover all models 9n, 2n and 8n early and late.
