Steel cleated wheels are not good in soft mud. If it is just slick on the surface they are OK but if the ground is soft for several inches they are not too good. They will bury the tractor is a single revolution of the wheels. Rubber tires are much better is the mud is deep.

I have a 1937 Model B John Deere on steel and you had better keep it in the barn if the ground is wet! The front and the rear will sink. Mucho Pronto! It will come right out in the spring! If you can find the flywheel to start it with!

Hi Andy. Someone posted some pics of an 8N with them installed a while back. Here's side and rear views of them on the tractor:

In contrast, here is an ad for war era 2N's with the steel wheels. It will show them to be very different than what I call these paddle wheels:

These may be sand wheels instead of mud wheels.

I have seen pictures of what we called steel wheels on the 9/2 N series. It seems they were manufactured that way during part of World War II when there was a real rubber shortage. I am old enough to remember the rationing - In fact I still have the ration book in my name with a few unused stamps in it. About the only kind of tire people in the US could get was a re-cap.

Neat... I could have used that in the Spring here. Was our wettest Spring on record. The N slipped and burried itself in mud up to its belly a couple of times. I used chains to improve the traction, and an electric winch to pull it out when it stuck (planted potatos, corn and beets).

WIsh I had those... I bet that would make a world of diference...

Definatly not turf tires. Must have to use rubber tires with them or they would sink in soft mud.
