It's harvest time again. finaly, Doing 12-14 hrs a day in a big R7 gleaner threshing wheat & it rained a couple days ago so had to shut down for a couple days got started back up this afternoon. On my down time I decided the drive way was gettin' a bit rough so I fired up Tor & spent the afternoon & evening gettin' some of the tractor work done before winter stops me. ya know something, I farm for a living & drive some big diesel equipment & drag some serious implements behind them . I farm cause I love it, not for the money. If I'm not operating this farm equipnt I'm gettin' it ready for next season. The little bit of time I get to play with my 2N is so much more relaxing. makes me travel back through time . farmin' in 1944 was a whole lot different then today. If these N's could talk, the stories they could tell.
All in all nothing beats an evening on the old iron to make life right again. My last farm was all JD No offense, & after a week of workin' the wheat fields a Sat. spent rakin' hay with a 650 Johnny Popper , 1954, just made life better. They may not have farmed as much land as we do today but they had much more enjoyable & relaxing equipment to do it with. Sorry to bore you, just the ramblings of a farmer.

Tyler, this is a great shot too! We just sold out Farmal "A" last month 'cause it had no hydraulics but sure was a puller. Comparable to our 8N. Got any shots of corn pickers in action?

Sending some of those old photos and writing what history you know of them to Reminisce magazine?
They are interesting.

Great story!

I've known for years that I would enjoy farming too. I don't care so much about money, and don't mind work. I'm not from a farm family though. I'm an engineer by training and career. On our homestead I have only 7 acres in farm counry, so I tinker and experiment with raising potatoes corn and beets. Not enough ground do more than a hobby.. but then the 7 acres suits my 1947 2N well.

Nothing better than working outside, in the sun, with a nice breeze blowing through your hair.... or so I believe.

Anyway, I enjoyed your story..

Jim

For those who haven't had the opportunity to see or use combines from the 8N time period, here's a couple of scans of owner's manuals for two Dearborn-Wood Bros. combines from '48 and '49:

Hi! Thank you! You are over in George Washington's birthplace. I've spent time in Montross and Warsaw and parts nearby. Very nice part of VA, especially if you like access to the water.

I'm in western Hanover County, between the villages of Montpelier and Beaverdam. 15 minutes from Lake Anna, 30 minutes to work..... .the proper ratio I believe..... .grin.

I have acquired my collection of manuals/ads/etc. from a variety of sources: Ebay, flea markets, antique shops, relatives, acquaintances and forum members here at YT who have sent them either out of appreciation for me helping them with something else, or just because they knew that I would archive them properly to preserve them and share the info with my fellow N-thusiasts.

Haven't seen you on YT as much as in the past. Are you recovering from your stroke ok?

Regards..... ..... Ed

Ed,
For what it's worth.
How long have you lived there? One of my Aunts her husband 8 kids lived in Beaver Dam. She used to own/run the Montpelier Inn. There last name is Myers. I was there once or twice but don't rememer much about the area. She moved back to Richmond after their divorce at least 10 years ago. One of her daughers married a local and lives somewhere in the area. Her last name is now a McConnell.

Hi Sam. My wife and I moved up here 7 years ago next week. Once my sons had grown up and moved on their own, we started looking to move where we could have more space, peace & quiet, and we found it up here. The place we moved from, Short Pump, VA (home of the famous Hiney Winery), had, over the 18 years that we lived there, evolved from a rural little village with a real general store, to a major suburb of Richmond, with sub-division after sub-division of colonial or transitional style homes, shopping centers, fast food joints, etc. Man, every time we drive in to shop, we are sooooo glad that we got outta there!

Haven't met any of the folks that you mentioned.

What part of MD are you in? My wife's family lives in Westminster, Finksburg and Towson.

Regards..... ..... Ed

Still looking to move out there, Ed - to Lynchburg/Roanoke/Blackburg/Bedford area. Any optical engineering/design or high-end Cisco jobs out that way? (grin)Been working a lot with the Cerent/Cisco 15327-15454s/1000BASE-TX GBICs networks and Cisco edge switches 3508/3512s etc)
Let me know!

Man o Man, how I would love to move. Mostly to get closer to your collection of 8N literature so I can run it through my color copier. (hahaha)
Plus, I can get a few real-world visits to the beer parties!!!!

Ed, thanks for all of the info - i just love your collection. Do you know anyone that still has or uses a combine for the 8N?????
Andy

Hi Andy:

>> Do you know anyone that still has or uses a combine for the 8N????? <<

Nope, sure don't. I haven't even seen one of em sitting by the road. Everyone around here uses more modern stuff.

>> Still looking to move out there, Ed - to Lynchburg/Roanoke/Blackburg/Bedford area. <<

We're just getting into that area, via our recent acquisition. I'll keep you in mind if I see anything.

Take care..... ..... ..Ed

Ed, just had to say I like your collection of old books and manuals that you are kind enough to show us on this board. My Dad has a neighbor that he thinks still has one of those old Dearborn combines sitting in the back of a shed and it has the Wisconsin motor on it. My Dad scrapped out one of those combines that he bought just for the motor because his 51 8N needed a new one and he found a combine with the 8N motor on it back in the late 60's and the engine is still going strong to this day. Thanks for the insight and keep up the good work. Greg NE

Hi Greg: Thanks for the kind words.

Apparently what you Dad did was not that uncommon. I've heard others mention swapping in combine engines to their N's. It's one of the reasons why some people report no serial number can be found on their block.
