HELP! My '48 8N suddenly became very hard to get started. After 5 minutes of running time, it starts backfiring through the carb. Has little power.

What should I look for?

Ron..... ...what Claus said

I would suspect low sparkies..... .5 minutes is typical time for bad ignition switch to make itself known. Try a jumper wire with alligator clipies around the ignition switch next time it happens.

Otherwize, I'd be inclined to suggest that you have a bad frontmount ignition coil and unfortunately, there is no "good" eazy shadetree mechanic test for a bad ignition coil except by replacement..... ...Dell

Backfiring through the carb happens when you have ignition and the intake valve is open. Usually, this infers that the intake valve is not operating normally. Check compression on the engine. Usually this will show the problem.
