Zenith carb?

I recently purchased a 1950 8N. I was testing it out with the bush hog when it quit. It would start fine but couldn't stay running. Cleaning the carb didn't help but I found out it would run fine at almost full choke. After a few minutes I noticed the choke had vibrated itself down to its off position. OK by me. 15 minutes later it started to falter so I pulled the choke again and it resumed operation with no apparent loss of power. Over the next few minutes I was able to slowly push the choke off. Due to its worn condition of jet needles and build up of crud I am considering a new one. However while cleaning it I saw that it is a Zenith carburator, not the Marvel which my service manual calls for. Could this be an original part? If so are there any parts manuals for this? Is it even worth fooling with? In the meantime I am going to stick it in a chemical vat. I am at a loss. Any help out there? Thanks

I also have a 1950 8n with a Zenith carburetor. I cleaned the carburetor and rebuilt with a carburetor kit. I found that the kits for the Zenith or the Marvel carburetors are both stocked at some auto parts stores. I was having similar problems you described, but after rebuilding the carb my 8n starts and runs much better

The Zenith is just as good a carburetor as the Marvel but is not original. The Zenith was used on lots of other brand tractors with good performance. It may be off something like an A, B, C, or H Farmall or an AC of some model. It probably just needs a good cleaning to get everything open again so it can draw in some gas.
Remember when chemical vating an aluminum carb that some chemicals will disolve the aluminum.
Take it to an International dealership and see if they recognize it to get a kit. Or you can make a gasket if you pay close attention to detail and if the needle and seat are still holding the gas level right in the bowl that is all it needs to be back on business.

It actually sounds like you have leak in the intake somewhere, maybe at the manifold to carb gasket, or at the manifold to head, or even a crack in the manifold. You might try to find it by spraying some wd40 around the suspected areas and see if the Idle speed changes.

Just a thought.
