I have a 49 8n # 245040.
Several things I have ?'s about.
First there is oil in comb chamber of the cyl.closet to the seat not sure if it is 1 or 3.
Is there anything that I can do to do a temp fix so I can get through the cutting season? Also there is a knocking sound coming from the cyl. next to this one. When I remove the spark plug it quits. As soon as I put it back, there is a knocking that comes back. Could be valve problems I guess. I noticed the other day when cutting that when I turned the tractor all the way to the right it would try and quit. There were times also that when trying to cut or even go up a hill while not cutting that it was losing power. When I got home is when I checked the plugs. The other plugs look ok. I cleaned all them and after replacing them, and running her for only a few min. that one plug had oil on it pretty bad, but it was still firing. Not sure if it was while I was cutting or not.

I have not done a compression check. What kind of gauge and fitting do I need to get to do this check. I have the f0-4 I&T shop manual. It tells a little about doing these checks.

Maybe some of you tractor guru's can give me some advice.

This tractor was my Dads. He bought it after I moved out in about 1987. We had a farmall C for years and when I moved away it was hard for him to put on cultivaters, bellymower and his planter.
So I convinced him to buy this 8N. He passed on in 99. My mother gave me the 8N and my older brother the farmall. He was in the middle of working on the starter when he passed away. The ring gear had to be replaced also. I got the 8N and before I could use it I had to break it down. This was the first thing that I had done to this tractor. This was about 2 years ago. She is in real good condition except for some minor problems that I see alot of other people have issues with too, like hydraulics and carb problems.

I have only been looking at this disscussion page for a couple of days. I bet that I will using it alot. I have taken alot of interest in this tractor this past summer. I have used it alot this summer for bush hogging.

We'll maybe one of you guy's didn't get to tired of reading this can help me out some. I am an Instrument Mechanic/Electrican by trade not an engine mech.

Thanks alot for any help

P.S. I am amazed at all of the time and interest that people have invested in these n-series tractors. It makes me realize what a treasure that I have.

First, don't shoot the messinger. That knocking sound you hear that goes away when you disconnect the spark plug for that cylinder is most likely a rod bearing. Less likely but still trouble is a piston pin or piston slap. Whatever it is, and especially if it is a kind of deep knock I would get in and fix it now before you beat the crank shaft beyond being turned or gouge a cylinder sleve.

Your mileage may vary

Robert..... .welcome to the N-Board.

Compression check, dry then wet, is really gonna tell you more about your problems than I could guess. I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife of 32 yrs.

As for compression gauge, I like the "screw-in" type with a hose. They're really not that expensive, you can also rent 'em at tool rentals.

As for a very temporary "oily sparkie fix", you can get "extenders" from NAPA, $1.

Traditionally, #1 cylinder is next to radiator, unless you have a sidewinder FWD mini car, then its usually on the left.

If'n you can read your FO-4, you're got a great foundation to figger out what to do next. You might just luck out and just need to replace the head gasket..... ..Dell
