I need to get a sickle bar mower for my 8N to cut the grass along irrigation ditches. Does anyone have any thoughts about what brand/type of mower best works with an 8N?? COmments will be appreciated. (A bush hog won't work cuz of the width of the diches). P

Phil,
I've been also looking for a sickle for my Ford 8N and my John Deere 5105 so I'm acutally looking for two of them. I've been reading up on these and there are some things to look out for (so I've read). One is as mentioned above about having the mower "level". Alot of the older sickles will not operate at an angle. I've had alot of people warn me about the pitmans but you can check with a local tractor supply to see what they carry and then try to match that to a sickle you can still find parts for easily. The tractor supply outfits usually carry pitmans for a few different sickles.
I've seen where the Ford 501 series has given alot of people good service. Actually I saw one of these in Arkansas or Missouri in the classifieds on this board a couple of days ago for about $200. Almost made me want to drive a little further North this weekend when I go that direction to my parents. John Deere 8's and 9's and New Idea I've also heard alot of good things about as well as New Holland. I talked to one guy here recently who owns a "pull-type" New Idea and uses it on a 8N and swears by it. Stick with a manufacturer you know and one that you can still get parts for and for the money, I can't see where you'd go wrong. I can't see why most any three point sickle wouldn't work if it's Cat 1. Good luck on finding one. If you live in the Northern states, shouldn't be too hard to find one. I've seen alot on www.agdealer.com but they are all in the Northern states. Not so easy, as far as I can tell, in SouthEast Texas.
Good Luck.

Phil, you want the sickle to cut ditches? If you are planning on cutting at an angle other than flat parallel to the ground, not all sickles will do that. I used an old Ford 3 pt (don't remember the model #) that used a crank and an oak pitman arm. It had a mechanism that if you raised the 3 point, it would raise the sickle and break the pitman. It is my understanding that not all sickles are this way that some can cut "uphill and downhill" Hopefully someone can fill us in on which ones they are.

I use a John Deere #9 behind my 850. I got the mower from my aunt who used it with an 8N. It's the only sickle mower I've ever used so I have nothing to compare it to, but I have very few complaints. The complaints I do have I'm sure are a result of my not understanding how it's supposed to work completely. I'm getting better at it, though.

We've used a JD #9 mower on our 8N for many thousands of bales. Does have some maintenance problems from time to time. Broke the chain in the internal drive once and also one of the internal clutch plates but it's mowed a lot of grass. Not too handy to take off and put on, we finally ended up by leaving it on all the time and using other tractors for raking, tedding, bailing and hauling in.
