It seems to me that a reduced point gap could cause backfiring. When I first got my 49 8n the wiring was bad and it would only start by pull starting. We only did this about two times but it backfired real loud through the exhaust. When I did the conversion, I took the distributor off and cleaned it. If I remember right, the point gap was down to about 4 thousandths. I did not have a manual at the time I reset the points, so I set it to 19 thousands. I have not had the distributor off since, about a year and a half now, but I have not had one speck of trouble from it. Hope your luck will change.

Robert..... ...Ford specs sez: 90 psi min. All your cylinders exceed the min. On a good engine, I would expect to see about a 10 psi increase "wet".

Your knock could well be a hole in the exhaust gasket.

But this doesn't address your "weak engine" problem. A tune-up would be a good place to start. The governor should respond to the load of going up a hill, it sounds like it doesn't. Do the I&T FO-4 governor adjust proceedure.

The backfiring sounds like poor ignition timing, or bad centrifical advance. Lack of power and backfiring is a timing issue. Check your centrifical advance weight mechanisms per your I&T FO-4 proceedures.

Bottom line, I think you have a good engine, donna mucka round, just fix the ignition and governor..... ..Dell
