Mohawk Loader on 8N?

I recently acquired a 47 8N with a tube type loader. The only 'name' I can find is a very faded yellow decal that I think says 'Mohawk'. The hydraulics run off a shaft from the front of the engine through the crank hole. The tubes have a couple of cracks that I can weld, but I am not sure that I want to. The whole thing looks kind of fragile. Almost looks like a home-built setup. Is this setup worth saving? The tractor is not running at the moment, but I was told that the loader did work before it was stored appx 10 years ago. Any info on Mohawk or tube loaders in general would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul II

Your original link didn't post the picture but I found it by digging into your parent directory. Your Mohawk (as you describe it) looks suspiciously like my Dearborn Model 19-21. These were designed for the N's, however many folks would maintain that the N's weren't designed for loaders. That being said, I have used my loader for light jobs such as moving rocks and gravel or lifting logs and such. It is handy if you don't have anything else for the job. It also makes an effective counterweight if you put a 6' mower on the rear as I have on mine. It just keeps a little more weight up front for surer steering. The downside is that it takes a little more muscle to crank that wheel around. I would say that assuming your pump and valve body and rams are OK and you only have to do a little welding to get it functioning again, you might find it worth your while to fix it up. E-mail me if you got any more questions. Geoff

I agree with Salmoneye that it looks like a dearborn loader. My uncle had one on his 8n and used it for everything. My uncle had an extra bar added to the main pivot joint that acts as a rollbar. He also has a 50 gallon drum full of concrete in back because he uses his loader as a crane much of the time. Having used it extensively I know it will lift alot of weight. Certainly more than our new Kubota B1700. The back weight is very helpfull if you plan on doing any really heavy lifting. It helps make steering easier. Until I made the new weight he was using the block off his last tractor, an early model Fordson.
