Our 8N runs fairly good and starts well, however, when it is hot and it has been running for a while, we must pull the choke out briefly to start it. Someone told me that it might be compression. Thanks

I can't tell you why in terms of the phesics of it but I can tell you for sure that there is nothing wrong with an N tractor that has to be choked when hot to restart. This is a common N trait. I drove a 48 8N brand new right out of the box when I was about 13 years old for many many hours and it had to be choked when hot to restart.

When you "choke" your carb, you enrich the mixture. Rich mixtures ignite eazier than lean mixtures. Hot sparkies don't need rich mixtures. THEREFORE logic implies that you have weak sparkies.

There are 2 time/heat related ignition problems with N-Tractors; gunked up ignition switch, usually shows up after about 15 minutes of running. OR bad ignition coil, usually shows up after about 45 minutes of running. Both problems "cure" themselves after about 2 hrs of cooling or overnight.

I'd suggest you seriously consider replacing your ignition coil. Unfortunately, there is no eazy shadetree mechanic test for bad ignition coil except by replacement..... ...dell

Choking problems not often cured by ignition fiddling

Although most carb problems are usually solved by a problem solved in the ignition, he sounds like he basically has no problem at all other than having a updraft carb. He doesn't say it won't start but he only has to briefly choke it. This is common and would more likely be solved by a slightly richer mixture.

not so much compression as an updraft carburetor

I have to do that on my 2N as well

Then, this really isn't a problem, right?? However, once in a while the float sticks and gas runs out--we have started shutting off the valve on the sediment bowl. Thanks.

Some would consider it esential to turn off the gas.

Since the gasoline is stored at an elevation higher than the engine, a badly adjusted float could fill the carb, manifold, cylinders, crankcase, etc.

It would be hard for the starter to try and crank an engine with gasoline filling the void above the pistons.

Do yourself a favor - shut off the gas between uses!
